East Coast Music Award nominations were announced today and we snagged three of 'em. Bam! Constellation is up for BEST GROUP RECORDING and BEST JAZZ RECORDING and our video "Agricola & Sarah" is up for VIDEO OF THE YEAR. Exciting times! The video award is a public vote so you can help us try and win it if you like... We'll let you know once the voting opens. The ECMAs are in Moncton this coming April... gonna be fun, no doubt. Couple of friends or ours have new albums coming out - just got a listen to the new Paper Beats Scissors album which is coming out this spring and it sounds awesome! He recorded it in Montréal, Sydney Smith did the artwork and Forward is releasing it so it is like Constellation's cousin album - have a listen here. Also, Becky Siamon is a great singer who is a friend of ours that we've often shared stages with. She is releasing her first record Breakfast Epiphanies this week with a show at the IDOW festival in Halifax. It also sounds great and a bunch of us played parts on it (Matt, Nick, Gina, Adam and Alec to be precise)- check it). Congratulations to Becky and Tim on putting out some good music! January 19, 2012

Check out these wonderful photos of our show at the Evergreen theatre in Margaretsville, NS. My favourite picture is this one that captures the forest of raised hands, both on and off stage (we were doing the wave!). Photo credit goes to the very skillful Steven and Ellie Kennard. You should check out their website to see a bunch more good show photos.
We also want to thank the wonderful humans of Tatamagouche, NS who came, clapped, sang, jumped, and russian-folk-danced up a storm at Fables Music Club last weekend. Good times, great sandwiches, and extremely frosty beer glasses are to be had there. Check 'em out! November 16, 2011
Check out this wonderful review of Constellation that was just published on the website Southern Souls - We are lovin' that people are enjoying this album! I especially like the nostalgic nod to the North Street Church Dance Party days as well as the line "apocalyptic synths" in reference to Valse Povero. November 15, 2011

If you've never seen a show at the Evergreen Theatre in Margaretsville, Nova Scotia you really should. It is a wonderful old church that is now a dedicated music venue and a beautiful place to watch a performance. We are there tonight! Here are some directions in case you want to come from the city or elsewhere. Show starts at 8pm - see you there. November 6, 2011

GYPSOPHILIA - Montreal from Mitch Fillion (southernsouls.ca) on Vimeo.
Thanks to wicked Halifax crowds who packed our release shows this last few days! The Carleton was fantastic last night and our masquerade on the weekend was totally sold out and packed to the rafters. Now we feel like we can relax a bit... Stay tuned though, I'll be putting up some photos and videos up soon (especially of our Seahorse show, so that you can re-live the costumes -Nick as a turtle, Matt as Adam, Gina as red riding hood and wolf at once- as well as some of the craziness from that night. In the meantime check out us playing "Montréal" in a deli in Toronto.October 28, 2011
Constellation is in the news! Check out this review in Halifax's weekly The Coast and this article in The Chronicle Herald. Pre-sales are finished for the Masquerade. The rest of the tickets are at the door. Come early to make sure you get in and to see the Smokin' Contra Band (who start at 10:30 sharp). Get your disguise ready! Call 422 6335 to book Carleton tickets for Tuesday. See you at the shows! October 20, 2011
You can get advance tickets for our Masquerade Dance Party at the Seahorse (Fri. 28 Oct) by clicking on the words "Masquerade Dance Party". For tickets to our LP release (Tues. 1 Nov) at the Carleton next week call 422-6335. Hope you can come! In other news check out this video of us performing at Caplansky's Deli on College St. in Toronto. Naturally, we stayed for lunch after we were done playing. Thanks to Mitch from Southern Souls for filming it. Check out a bunch of other videos of other bands he's made on his website. October 17, 2011

The sold-out crowd at the Black Sheep Inn in Wakefield was rocking last night. Thanks to Dry River Caravan (accordion, clarinet, dancing, et c.) for playing with us and for all the wonderful people of the Wakefield/Ottawa zone for coming to see us! Back on the road now, following the yellow line up to Kingston for our show on Tuesday. October 7, 2011

Here we are in Fredericton at our show this past weekend. We were scattered all over the altar of the Wilmot United Church in front of a full house. What a beautiful sounding space (trumpet and singing sounded especially great in there!). Thanks to Rose Cousins for taking this photo and for putting on a great show that we could be a part of. Maybe someone reading this has photos or video from our rowdy show that we played at Wilser's later that same night? Send it to us. It was so much fun people danced until their clothes broke ... seriously! Thanks New Brunswick. Next stop, Deep Roots in Wolfville, NS. September 12, 2011
(Gina and Adam from our last trip to New Brunswick...) and we are off to NB this week for a couple of shows and a couple of cool collaborations. Friday the 16th we are in Hampton at the Vintage Bistro with Keith Mullins and on Saturday the 17th we are in Fredericton at the Harvest Jazz and Blues Festival playing with Rose Cousins and Jaeda Kelly. We'll be doing two shows that night at Harvest - the 8 pm show with Rose at the Wilmot United Church and then a late night set on our own at Wilser's Room 'round 11 pm or so. Gonna be fun. See you there. There will be fireworks. September 5, 2011
You know those short musical interludes between stories on CBC radio's "As It Happens"? It has always been a dream of mine to make one of those. Well, the other night I was listening to the show and heard the last section of "Valse Povero" (one of the tunes from our new CD Constellation) used as one of those interludes! Dream come true. Hey all - Our new album Constellation won't be officially available until the fall BUT you can pre-order the CD or the vinyl album if you want (you'll get the record in the mail as soon as it is ready, plus a digital download of it right away).
Follow this link right here
... hope you do.
Plus you can click here to listen right now to the single, "Montréal". July 8, 2011
Tonight the Halifax Jazz Festival kicks off with a big show (The Bad Plus!) at the new tent (in front of the old Market on Lower Water Street) at 8 pm and then us playing on the Tall Ship Silva at 11 pm. The boat show has already sold out! If you didn't get a ticket then you'll just have to go to the Bad Plus and then come down after to see us off (I am picturing people waving their hats and popping champagne bottles as we pull away from the warf). But tomorrow night Carson Downey (rippin' blues guitarist) is doing the same trip so you can sail with him... Click here to see what else is up at the festival. Go see some music - this is the best week of the year in Halifax! July 3, 2011
We are still buzzing from our Vancouver show - an audience of 3000 wonderful people at sunset in the park who were so quick to make it into a party! There was clapping and whooping, a sea of hands in the air and people jumping up and down as high as they could... That was one of THE best shows in our life as a band! Vancouver, you've done this to us twice now...
(p.s. someone just posted this video from the show ... anyone else have pictures or video to share?)
Great show in Victoria last night. The club was rockin' like crazy and the audience was fantastic - dancing hard all night and even calling us back for an encore by chanting "HALIFAX, HALIFAX, HALIFAX"! What a pleasure! Now our little circus is off to Vancouver for our last tour show before we head home for a while... July 2, 2011
We spent Canada day in beautiful Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. We played in the afternoon out in the sun by the river (with people dancing on a bed of straw) and then a couple of late night sets at a nice club called the Bassment. What a great town.
Check out the photos page for more photos from Edmonton and Saskatoon's shows. July 1, 2011
What a great time in Edmonton we had - wicked hospitality, got to play on the radio at CKUA, the show SOLD OUT, and we had a blast on stage. To make it even more fun this was the universe prerelease preview premiere of Constellation. Travelling and performing for 24 hrs straight is a trip though... now we are about to hit Saskatoon. Maybe there is time for a nap first?
June 24, 2011
Our new album has a cover! Thanks to the extremely tasteful and talented Sydney Smith for the wicked design. It is the perfect cover for Constellation and will look REALLY good on the 12" LPs that we are going to get pressed. My oh my this is all very exciting. June 21, 2011

Check out the cover story in the coast this week about Chaz Thorne's feature film Whirlygig. The movie opened in Halifax theatres last week and we are all over it performing the music that makes up the score. Go see it! You'll hear us with the special addition of tuba, drums, clarinet and pirate singing (much respect to Darren Fung!). April 30, 2011

In the middle of a wonderful Symphony Nova Scotia pops show last night in Charlottetown, Gypsophilia took home an ECMA for Instrumental Recording of the Year 2011 for Sa-ba-da-OW! Thanks to the ECMA for the great party and the pewter statuette! April 13, 2011
Thanks to all the great crowds in Sackville, St Andrews and Hampton NB for a really fun tour. We'll undoubtedly be back! Gina and Adam have a special bond. November 30, 2010
Gypsophilia is excited to be heading into the studio again - the band is hard at work writing and rehearsing music for our third album.  We'll be playing on board the train in December on our way to Montreal, where we'll record the album with producer Howard Bilerman (Arcade Fire, Bell Orchestre, Basia Bulat, Black Ox Orkestar, Stars, Lhasa) at the hotel2tango studio.
If you are in Halifax you can preview songs from the new album at the Carleton, on Tuesday, Dec 7 at 9pm (see show listings for more info).
Please email us any recommendations for food (and especially coffee) in Mile End! October 5, 2010
We're holding a Masquerade Ball on Halloween weekend at the Seahorse in Halifax, to celebrate the release of our new music video, a beautiful stop-motion animation by Sydney smith and Jason Levangie.  The show also features Krasnogorsk and DJ Regalia.  Show starts at 10pm and cover is $15. September 15, 2010
Huzzah! September 11, 2010
The Atlantic film Festival is coming up (Sept 16-25) and Gypsophilia has connections with three films being shown.  On Sept 17 Chaz Thorne's film Whirligig is screening at the Atlantic Gala. Gypsophilia played the music for the film's soundtrack which was composed by Darren Fung. It is a fantastic score which works
really well with the band's style - we hope you can check it out!  Then on Sept 21 the CBC Atlantic Shorts Gala will feature two of our music videos - Hietzing / Battery Life by Scott Simpson and a beautiful stop-motion animation piece for Agricola & Sarah by Sydney Smith and Jason Levangie. We are working with singer/guitarist/composer Ryan McGrath on his upcoming debut album - recently we went into the studio to record some tracks live off the floor.   The album is slated for release in May 2010 and will be end up being a mix of pop, soul, country and folk sounds. It has been an awesome experience so far and the results of the collaboration are exciting! January 19, 2010

We're back in town after a very busy summer during which the band toured across the country, making stops at major festivals from Victoria BC all the way to St. John's NL. The tour was a big success, with lots of sell out shows - we also sold out of CDs and had to get more shipped out twice. Among the many highlights of the trip were:
- playing on the same stage Stevie Wonder had played on at the Montreal Jazz Festival (two jumbo-tron screens!)
- thousands of Vancouver fans dancing in the rain in Gastown
- playing shows in Newfoundland's beautiful Gros Morne National Park
- our new album Sa-ba-da-OW! rose to the top of the national campus radio charts
The band is now planning a busy fall - more shows (including a performance on the mainstage at the PEI Jazz and Blues Festival on Sept. 26), rehearsing and recording lots of new compositions, two music video projects and composing the score for an independent short film.
August 1, 2009
Sa-ba-da-OW! has been charting well, staying in the top 10 on Chartattack's national chart for 9 weeks, including 6 weeks at number 1.
July 16, 2009
Most of our show from last night's performance at the Atlantic Jazz Festival in Halifax was rebroadcast on CKDU FM today and is now available for download from the CKDU archives. It was on today from approximately 10:30-12:05.
June 22, 2009
Thanks to everyone who came out to FRED. this past weekend for our album release shows. We feel extremely lucky to be able to play two nights to a room full of friendly and supportive faces - it was a great way to kick off the tour. We'll see everyone back in Halifax for our show at the Seahorse on July 15.
February 14, 2009
Our new album, Sa-ba-da-OW!, is finished, and we're really happy with it. We also saw the cover design today which is great. The album will be released in Halifax in mid June, after which we will hit the road for a coast to coast national festival tour! In the meantime, we have lots of shows coming up in the Maritimes, including ECMAs and a bunch of dates throughout NS. You can find out more on the shows page - we have some listed already and we'll be adding more dates in the coming days as they are confirmed.
Our ECMA-nominated album Minor Hope is now available for digital download online at iTunes, eMusic, Amazon, Napster and Rhapsody.
December 14, 2008
The band has finished recording tracks for a follow up album to 2007's Minor Hope. We are currently in the studio finishing the mixing and getting ready to master. The album is due for release in June 2009.
September 24, 2008
Gypsophilia has been selected to play at the Nova Scotia Music Week Gala Awards Show on Sunday, Nov. 9, 8 pm at New Glasgow's John Brother MacDonald stadium. We're also happy to announce that Minor Hope has been nominated for a Nova Scotia Music Award for Group Recording of the Year!
