Ross Burns
- Guitar![]() |
Ross Burns is inspired by guitarists Wes Montgomery, Kenny Burrell, Grant Green, and Django Reinhardt. After taking lessons with Halifax-based guitarist Ross Anderson, and turning aside from music for a time for study and travel, Burns is now an integral member of Gypsophilia, roots-reggae band Verbal Warning, Brazilian-beat group Zumbi, and is also an accomplished practitioner of the Brazilian dance/martial art Capoeira. Burns’s intense soloing is integral to Gypsophilia’s hard-driving, swinging sound, and he would be sorely missed were he to quit the band |
Sageev Oore
- Piano/Accordion/Melodica/Fender Rhodes/etc.| Sageev Oore is an award-winning concert pianist, composer and computer science professor. Since appearing in his teens as a soloist with Symphony Nova Scotia, Sageev has collaborated frequently with many outstanding Canadian artists. In addition to his inspired improvisations, Sageev’s multi-instrumental talent – on piano, harpsichord, Fender Rhodes, accordion and melodica – adds a variety of textures to Gypsophilia’s sound, and he would be sorely missed were he to quit the band.
Matt Myer
- Trumpet![]() |
In 1992 Matt Myer struck a deal to be excused from elementary school choir on the condition that he join band in the seventh grade. Since that time he has won an ECMA and a Juno with the Johnny Favourite Swing Orchestra, and been involved with numerous Halifax groups, including Verbal Warnin', Scott 'n' The Rocks, and Zumbi. The newest member of Gypsophilia, Matt’s dynamic trumpet voice has invigorated and inspired our playing, and he would be sorely missed were he to quit the band. |
Nick Wilkinson
- Guitar![]() |
Rhythm guitarist Nick Wilkinson has studied gypsy jazz for a number of years, and travelled to France to attend the 2003 Django Reinhardt festival, where he played with some of the masters of the style. His love of composing and performing music is chiefly responsible for years three, four, and five of his two year Master’s programme in medieval history. In addition to writing music for Gypsophilia, Nick’s exciting, propulsive rhythm is the core of the band’s sound, and he would be sorely missed were he to quit the band. |
Adam Fine
- Double Bass![]() |
Like most post-modern musicians, Adam Fine enjoys playing in all traditions, drawing out the best materials from each to add to his bag of tricks. As such, Fine works regularly with The Fancy Lebanese Country Band, salsa group Alma Latina, and acid-jazz-influenced Atlantic Standard Time. Fine’s dynamic and inventive bass work drives Gypsophilia, and he would be sorely missed were he to quit the band. |
Alec Frith
- Guitar![]() |
Although formally trained as a bass player, Alec Frith was forced to give up playing bass temporarily due to health problems. During this time, his love for the music of Django Reinhardt inspired him to take up the guitar. Alec is not just a capable soloist, but is also one of the band’s composers, and he would be sorely missed were he to quit the band. In addition to his work with Gypsophilia, Frith plays bass in roots-reggae band Verbal Warnin' and is a popular guitar and bass teacher. |
Gina Burgess
- Violin| In addition to her numerous accomplishments as a classically trained violinist, with ensembles such as Halifax’s Uptown Quartet and Symphony Nova Scotia, Gina Burgess’ superlative technique and keen ear make her a first-rate improviser. For this reason, she would be sorely missed were she to quit the band. Gina is on hiatus in Toronto until late spring of 2008.
Daniel Oore
- Saxophones![]() |
In addition to his startling accomplishments as an improviser and composer, saxophonist Daniel Oore has worked as a choreographer, dancer and clown in a number of productions. He is sought after as a clinician by many different organizations, and is a member of the Music faculty at Acadia University. Danny’s incredible musical ability and charismatic stage antics have helped to shape the band's musical identity and to energize our live shows. He is also one of Gypsophilia’s primary composers, and he would be sorely missed indeed were he to quit the band. Dani is currently on hiatus from Gypsophilia to study abroad. |
